Bridges
to College golf event deemed a success
By George Starks
GREENVILLE- One hundred local residents came out on a hot, humid day
for one reason. To play 18 holes of golf to raise money for the Bridges
to College charity.
An added attraction on the day was former New England Patriot left
offensive tackle, Matt Light. Light served as the guest auctioneer for
the event, raising over $4,000.00
“It’s a huge success,” said chairperson Marlise McCallister. “We have
exactly 100 people out playing in the event today. This is an
organization in the Greenville and Ansonia school districts that
mentors first generation college students to go to college. We also
work with elementary and junior high students by planting seeds to
further their education. With the amount of people here today playing
and the money raised from the auction, this has been a very successful
day.”
The late Karhl McCallister, the father of Marlise, was a big part of
the program.
“He was very active in the program and after he passed away, we needed
a fund raiser and we felt this would be a great way to honor him,”
McCallister said.
This year marked the third year for the golf tournament.
“Bridges to College has been in existence for about six years,”
McCallister said. “If you go to our website (bridges2college.org) it
will give you our history for more information.”
The goal for the day was to raise 15k for the charity.
“We will surpass that goal for the day,” said McCallister. “With Matt
being here, it’s just fabulous to have such a quality person coming in
to help us out. He is very well respected here and in the Boston area
and Matt is all about helping kids and that’s why we thought to ask him
to come in and help.”
