Champion Runner Receives Senate Praise
COLUMBUS —Sam Prakel, the Ohio High School Athletic Association’s
Division II State Champion in the 1600 and 3200 meter categories, was
honored at the Statehouse on Tuesday. State Senator Keith Faber (R-
Celina) led the Senate chamber in recognizing the accomplishments of
the Versailles High School junior.
Last fall, Prakel also claimed the Division II State Cross Country
Title and was named Gatorade’s Ohio Boys Cross Country Runner of the
Year for 2011.
Prakel won the state cross country title as a junior and was also a
state champion for the Versaills Cross Country team in the 1600 and
3200 meters.
Prakel won the Division II boys mile run finished with a time of
4:10.33 and backed that up with a 3200 winning time of 9:16.14 at Jesse
Owens Memorial Stadium.
Both times were personnal bests for Prakel.
Prakel also ran on the 4x800 relay team that took silver at state on a
team that finished third overall in Columbus. Running with teammates
Chad Winner, Sam Subler and Micheal Wenig, the team finished behind
Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary’s in the D-II competition in a time of
7:56.21, posting a behind the winning time of 7:51.75.
Senator Faber represents Ohio’s 12th Senate District which includes
Allen, Champaign, Mercer, Preble, and Shelby Counties, and contains
portions of Auglaize and Darke Counties. He currently serves as
President Pro Tempore of the Ohio Senate.
