Greenville School District…
GSD to hold
Community Meeting in Superintendent Search
By Bob Robinson
Greenville schools will be holding a community meeting Thursday to get
public input on its search for a superintendent to replace retiring
Supt. Susie Riegle. Riegle will leave the District July 30, and then
will take a position as principal of Fairborn Elementary School.
The June 21 meeting will take place at St. Clair Memorial Hall from 7
to 9 p.m. It is being conducted on behalf of the Board of Education by
Dr. Richard Caster, Ohio School Boards Association.
These are the questions Caster and the Board hope the community will
address:
1. What do you see as the challenges the district will face over the
next five years?
2. What do you expect from the new superintendent in meeting these
challenges?
3. What are the personal and professional qualities you expect the new
superintendent to possess?
Caster held the same meeting recently with Greenville schools staff. It
was attended by about two dozen teachers and other staff members.
The first (and possibly primary) challenge noted was public perception.
Also addressed was the changing demographics in Greenville and the
District… Caster noted that the size of the average school district in
Ohio was actually 1,200 to 1,500, which made Greenville with 2,700
students kind of an “urban district in a rural county.”
Of special note was the lack of public knowledge regarding all of the
“wonderful things occurring in the District.”
Responses to the second and third qualities were often overlapping, and
while a number of specific issues were addressed, the theme of public
perception and developing a good report with business and the community
were high on the list.
“Get the word out on our outstanding programs,” was a recurring concern.
At one point, Caster told the group that if the person they wanted
actually existed, “you probably couldn’t afford them.” He added,
however, this was typical of most districts he worked with.
Realistically he gives the board five or six who have the most
qualities mentioned.
The application deadline is Monday, June 18. Interviews will begin on
July 7.
Following the session with Caster, retiring staff were presented to the
group. See a list of retirees below. Every time an East School teacher
was presented to the group, a half dozen teachers from that building
stood up with a huge banner that said “You Will Be Missed!”
The morning was wrapped up with an Appreciation Luncheon for all staff
members that included music and – you guessed it – dancing.
