Iwo Jima
awesome highlight of Grand Parade
Versailles Poultry Days theme was Operation Poultry
By Bob Robinson
See below for photo sets.
The Grand Parade for Operation Poultry kicked off on time at 11 a.m.
Saturday with easily 150 participants and a maze of streets packed with
spectators as it moved toward its ultimate goal…
The 61st annual Versailles Poultry Days at the high school grounds.
It was a rural America small town celebration at its best. There were
fire trucks and other emergency vehicles, elected representatives, the
contestants for Miss Chick and Little Miss Poultry Days, organizations
like the Darke County Cancer Association, the Versailles High School
Band, this year’s Grand Marshall Tom Donnelly, Versailles Mayor Jeff
Subler and and and… well, you had to be there.
It was something to see.
There were dozens of service men and women, military vehicles and
military oriented participants in the parade. It was a great tribute to
those who protect our freedoms.
The highlight, at least in my humble opinion, was the float depicting
Iwo Jima. First glance? A well-built tribute created by a master
craftsman… then there was a slight movement and suddenly you realized
these were real people!
It was awesome!!
The parade lasted about an hour and 15 minutes. At least that’s what my
feet told me. They were tired dogs by the time I snapped the final
picture and made my way over to the high school… but that’s another
story.
County News Online was at the parade in full force with a half dozen
volunteers handing out flyers about our community news service… we hope
you will enjoy these pictures. There will be more to come of the parade
and the festival itself – along with a few more details and photos of
the Miss Chick contestants – on a post in the next day or two.
Enjoy.
