The 2012 Versailles Bike rodeo was held on a breezy Saturday morning June 2 at the Versailles EMS building.  The new accommodations were a fantastic venue with plenty of room for a full bicycle safety course and room inside for the other activities.  The event was hosted by Magoto State Farm Insurance, the Versailles Firefighters and the Versailles Police Department.

The Safety course had different stations for working on various skills: mounting and dismounting, circling and changing direction, straight line control, weaving and maneuvering, stopping ability, short radius turning, and slow speed control.

Free bicycle helmets and a raffle for new bikes were given with the help of monies donated by Midmark Corporation,  The William J Robertson Memorial Fund, Darke County Prosecutor, Versailles Poultry Days and Bruns Animal Clinic.  This support is much appreciated!

Thank you to others involved: The American Legion Ladies Aux of Versailles who did  “ident-a-kid” for over 100 children!  Benge’s Bike Shop inspected each of the bikes going through the courses, members of the Versailles Emergency Medical Services fitted the helmets and manned the raffle,

The Children’s Medical Center of Dayton donated 25 bike helmets, VPP Industries provided flyers for the school children telling of the event, McDonalds of Greenville donated orange drink and  free coupons, and Versailles Ace provided bags to hold the educational materials supplied by Magoto Insurance, the Police and Fire Departments.  Also thank you to the Village of Versailles for the use of barricades and cones and advertising as well as Langston Graphics and CountyNewsOnline for advertising.

The Versailles Police Department registered over 80 bikes, so if a lost or stolen bike is recovered the owner may be found.

Approximately 145 children participated in the rodeo.

There was also a special appearance of the State Farm Good Neighbear, McGruff theCrime Dog, and the Versailles Fire Dog thanks to Justin, Kayla and Tyler Bruns.

Lucky winners of bikes and a scooter were:  Jeremiah Wagner, Avery Simon, Chloe Vogel, Reed Grillot, Nick Gehret, Lexi Magoto, Adam Gehret, Chad Shimp, Kayla Bruns and Jayla Pothast.

Additional photos may be viewed on Facebook at Tom Magoto Insurance.

A special thank you to Brian Pearson for initiating this year’s event and to all the volunteers who made this year’s Rodeo a grand success!
