Team Receives Grant from Piqua Community Foundation
May 19, 2012
Edison
Community College’s club baseball team has received a grant from the
Piqua
Community Foundation to help cover costs of equipment for the program.
The $1,000
grant will be used to purchase protective screens and bats, according
to Dr.
Thomas Martinez, who coaches the team. The club also plans on
purchasing a
portable pitching mound with the funds.
“These are
things that we really need to keep the program going strong,” said
Martinez,
who coached the Chargers to a 13-9 record in the team’s first season in
nearly
20 years. “The entire team greatly appreciates this donation from the
Piqua
Community Foundation and we’ll be putting it to good use as we prepare
for next
year’s season.”
Over the
past year, the team has been able to raise more than $18,000 in
start-up funds
to help cover costs of equipment, game travel and officiating fees.
The Charger baseball team returned to
action in 2012 after being out of action for nearly 20 years. The team
faced
competition from Ohio State, Bowling Green, Indiana, Purdue and
Cincinnati in
its first season.
