Fallen are
honored throughout Darke County
Memorial Day 2012 Greenville
Memorial Day 2012...
By Bob Robinson
Day is done, gone
the sun,
From the hills, from the lake, From the skies.
All is well, safely rest,
God is nigh.
Go to sleep, peaceful sleep,
May the soldier or sailor, God keep.
On the land or the deep,
Safe in sleep.
The mournful strains of Taps floated through the air in many areas
around Darke County Monday.
In
Greenville, the parade lined up on Sycamore Street in front of
Greenville Library. It began at 1 p.m. and stopped to honor those lost
in “the deep” at Greenville Creek on North Broadway. Following the toss
of flowers into the creek was the traditional 21-gun-salute, then Taps.
The parade then proceeded to Greenville Cemetery to honor those fallen
in service to their country. Participation included the American
Legion, Disabled American Veterans, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and
the VFW Auxiliary.
Among the speakers were Greenville HS NJROTC student Chad Denman, who
recited the Gettysburg Address. The main speaker was Joseph Lenhart
from the Ohio Veterans of Foreign Wars.
The ceremony included the presentation of wreaths, and a 21-gun salute
followed by Taps.
Also participating were local First Reponders and the Greenville High
School Marching Band.
John Brumbaugh said of Lenhart, “when someone has both a Combat Badge
and a Purple Heart, that means more to me than any organization.”
He served in combat and despite being wounded, came home to continuing
serving his country.
Nearly a dozen events were scheduled throughout Darke County Monday.
They included Ansonia, Van Buren Township, Stelvideo Church, Greenville
Township Memorial Gardens, Union City Cemetery, Beamsville Christian
Church, Liberty Township, Gettysburg Cemetery and Greenville.
