Fallen are

Memorial Day 2012 Versailles
Memorial Day 2012...
By Bob Robinson
Day is done, gone
the sun,
From the hills, from the lake, From the skies.
All is well, safely rest,
God is nigh.
Go to sleep, peaceful sleep,
May the soldier or sailor, God keep.
On the land or the deep,
Safe in sleep.
The mournful strains of Taps floated through the air in many areas
around Darke County Monday.
In Versailles, the parade and service was conducted by the Versailles
American Legion. It lined up at the Vets Club on Center Street. It
began at 10:30 a.m. and reached the bridge at the creek on So West St.
(St Hwy 47) shortly afterward.
Four young girls tossed flowers over the bridge to pay respects to
those “lost in the deep,” followed by a 21-Gun Salute and Taps. Mayor
Jeff Subler rededicated the bridge as the Versailles Memorial Bridge in
honor of its Veterans.
Following this ceremoney, the parade moved to Greenlawn Cemetery where
services continued with special recognition for World War II veterans.
Also honored were Vets from other combat areas, including Korea and
Vietnam.
Speakers included Mayor Subler and SSgt. Tony Baker.
Participating in the parade were Versailles First Responders,
Versailles Boys and Girls Scouts and the Versailles High School
Marching Band.
Nearly a dozen events were scheduled throughout Darke County Monday.
They included Ansonia, Van Buren Township, Stelvideo Church, Greenville
Township Memorial Gardens, Union City Cemetery, Beamsville Christian
Church, Liberty Township, Gettysburg Cemetery and Greenville.
County News Online would like to thank Dick Coffield for his photo of
the flowers being tossed from Versailles Memorial Bridge.
