SleepView® Honored at Edison Awards
VERSAILLES,
Ohio (April 30, 2012) – The Midmark SleepView® Monitor/Portal has been
recognized with a Bronze Award for most innovative product by the 2012
Edison
Awards. SleepView was honored in the Science/Medical category, one of
fifteen
categories recognized by the Edison Awards.
The Edison
Awards, celebrating 25 years of honoring the best in innovation and
excellence
in the development of new products and services, announced the 2012
winners at
the sold-out April 26th event in New York City at the historic ballroom
of New
York’s famed Capitale. Hundreds of senior executives from some of the
world’s
most recognized companies gathered to acknowledge the hard work and
commitment
of all of the 2012 Edison Award winners.
“Midmark
strives to develop and introduce innovative solutions that meet the
industry’s
need for efficient and effective patient care,” said Tom Treon, senior
product
manager for Midmark. “SleepView sets a new benchmark in the testing and
diagnosis of OSA. We are honored that our efforts have been recognized
by the
Edison Awards and we are thrilled to be in the company of the other
industry-leading companies that were named Edison Award finalists.”
Introduced
in late 2011, the Midmark SleepView Monitor is the market’s smallest
and
lightest portable home sleep testing device for obstructive sleep apnea
(OSA)
that meets the American Academy of Sleep Medicine’s guidelines for a
Type-III
portable monitor. Midmark worked in partnership with Cleveland Medical
Devices
Inc. (CleveMed) for licensing of the SleepView technology.
SleepView
allows patients to be tested for OSA in the comfort, convenience and
privacy of
their own home. When connected to the Midmark SleepView Portal, this
system
provides prescribing physicians with secure, HIPAA compliant online
access to
raw data or a bridge to registered polysomnographic technologists and
board-certified sleep physicians who provide scoring, professional
interpretation and treatment recommendations.
OSA is a
repeated interruption of normal breathing during sleep due to a
collapse of the
upper airway. It is
estimated to impact
as many people as asthma and diabetes; yet, almost 90 percent of the
population
with the disease is undiagnosed and untreated. OSA does in fact hold
serious
health and economic consequences. Numerous studies link OSA to major
chronic
diseases such as stroke, heart failure, diabetes, obesity, hypertension
and
increased odds of serious car crash injuries.
Economic studies have also shown that
people with untreated OSA have 200
percent higher healthcare costs than similar people without OSA.
The ballot
of nominees for the Edison Awards is judged by more than 3,000 senior
business
executives and academics from across the nation whose votes acknowledge
the
Finalists’ success in meeting the award criteria of Concept, Value,
Delivery
and Impact. The Panel includes members of the powerful Marketing
Executives
Networking Group (MENG), which has been partnered with the Edison
Awards since
2009.
The members
of the Edison Awards Steering Committee are senior executives with
diverse
marketing, scientific, and business backgrounds who monitor the
development and
successful launch of innovative products each year. The Committee is
responsible for bestowing the annual Edison Achievement Awards and
serves as a
guidepost in developing the list of nominees that is presented to the
Edison
Award judges.
The 2012
Edison Awards are sponsored by Nielsen, Discovery Communications,
Science
Channel, USA Today, CSRware, and applepeak. For more information about
