East School
Blue Fridays at East
By Bob Robinson

Bob,

Here are a few of our photos. November is Diabetes awareness month. Diabetes of Dayton is joining in - in the Wear Blue and Think Blue Fridays. I am very thankful for a staff that supports my family in this way :) Our son Aaron is 17 years old and was diagnosed on March 2, 2010. Although Aaron is under such good control there are many who are not aware, or do not have the family and friends Aaron has. Thank you so much for being at East to be part of our day!

I didn’t have a clue when I showed up for my sub assignment at East School on Friday. I didn’t notice the blue clothing – I’m not good at that – but I couldn’t miss the blue hair… either the wigs or the spray.

I was wearing one of my typical “uniforms” – tan on brown. I don’t pay much attention to how others dress, and even less to how I dress. Whatever is clean and next in line in my closet.

“Where’s your Blue?”

“What blue? Was I supposed to wear blue?”

“Blue Friday…”

“Okay…”

“I have some Blue hair coloring…”

“Not a chance.

“It washes out.”

“Not a chance. If I’d known, I’d have worn my ‘blue and gray’ uniform, but no one told me. I’ll wear a wig, I guess, if you have one floating around. So what’s up?”

Someone suggested Blue eyeliner… didn’t have TOO much of a problem with that, but the kids started coming in and the day had begun.

That was when I found out that November is Diabetes Awareness Month, and a member of the staff has a diabetic son. The school was showing its support to the Wise family and their son Aaron.

Not only were staff members wearing Blue, a huge number of the students, third and fourth graders, were showing their support as well. Due to privacy concerns, photos of the children were not taken.

I asked Shawna to send me the photos that were taken of the staff (in the morning, then later in the day). She enclosed the personal letter above with the pictures. I asked if I could publish it and got the following response.

Bob,

I shared this with my family. We would be honored. This is the Think Blue Wear Blue campaign from Diabetes of Dayton. As an office of "Diabetes of Dayton" we have decided to join in the movement called Blue Fridays and wear our Blue on Fridays to promote diabetes awareness. Will you join us in encouraging your family and friends to wear blue on Fridays? Please post pictures of your Blue and let's bring diabetes awareness to our communities.

Blue Fridays is an initiative to bring attention to World Diabetes Day, and to advocate and bring awareness for diabetes and the people living with it. Diabetes is more than a national issue; it's a world epidemic. This year, I want to rally the diabetes community to celebrate World Diabetes Day.

Thanks Again! Blessed,

As requested, I’m sharing this with my County News Online family. If I’m invited back to East School on a Friday, you can rest assured I’ll be wearing my “Blue.”

The human spirit and capacity for caring knows no bounds.
