25 Advisory
Members Attend Career Tech Fall Advisory Meeting
The Automotive Program at Greenville High School Career Tech Center
held its Fall Advisory Committee Meeting on October 2, 2012.
The main agenda topic was the new NATEF Accreditation and how this will
impact GHS. Mr. Anderson explained in detail the new standards and then
opened the floor to discussion on what areas of ASE tasks need to be
taught above the minimum standards in Maintenance and Light Repair
(M.L.R.).
After much discussion for the twenty-five members, the committee agreed
that above the M.L.R. standards more focus needs to be given to brakes,
documentation and communication skills, steering and suspension, and
air conditioning in that order.
The M.L.R. standard requires 540 contact hours and GHS has 875 contact
hours of instruction that includes lab and classroom. Mr. Anderson and
Mr. Nicholas will cover the task list on brakes completely, 105 contact
hours. Additionally 50 hours will be devoted to documentation and
communication roleplaying. There will also be 95 hours of instruction
on steering and suspension and use the remaining 85 hours on
instruction of air conditioning. This will not allow the complete
instruction of A/C but meets the need of the Advisory Committee.
Success was shared regarding the SillsUSA student team placing first in
the State Competition last spring which qualified them to attend the
National SkillsUSA Competition in Kansas City in June. They placed in
the top 6 at nationals with their project “Riding with Steering and
Suspension”.
The 2012-2013 Project is sponsored by GM and is titled “Energizing
Tomorrow’s Technicians”. The auto students have been working diligently
and the project is coming along quickly. Various businesses in the
community have provided their support of the project.
