Edison Community College
National Medical Assisting Recognition Week

Faculty, staff and students enrolled in the Medical Assistant program at Edison will join thousands across the country the week of Oct. 15 for Medical Assistants Recognition Week, recognizing the valuable contributions these members of the health care community provide on a daily basis.

The series of events is sponsored by the Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA), which provides professionals with education, certification, credential acknowledgment, networking opportunities, scope-of-practice protection, and advocacy for quality patient-centered health care.

“We’ll be having multiple social gatherings in classes and carry-ins during class throughout the week,” said Heather Young, Director of Medical Assisting at Edison.

Medical assistants work in ambulatory care settings like clinics and physician’s offices performing lab tests, administering medications and assisting in minor procedures, in addition to various other health profession-related tasks. They also perform many of the clerical and administrative tasks involved outside of direct patient care, such as medical billing and coding.

The Medical Assisting program at Edison provides a strong foundation for those interested in entering a health services field.

“One of the benefits is that it is a certificate program, which can be accomplished in one year. It gives a student the entry level skills needed in order to work in the medical field,” said Young. “We see students continue their education and move on to get their associate’s degree. The program allows our students to customize their degree so they can pick up a certificate of phlebotomy and medical coding, so by the time they finish they have three certificates and an associate’s degree.”

The program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs upon the recommendation of the Curriculum Review Board of the American Association of Medical Assistants Endowment. With campuses located in Piqua and Greenville, Edison works closely with business and industry partners to help meet the growing demands of employers throughout Ohio by providing training and programs that lead to employment.
