Darke County Fair
The Downstairs
at the Fair

Like any other young person at the fair, most don't like to frequent
the Coliseum, most likely. Why would they? There's no games, no rides,
no fun to be had. True or false? This author says false.
Okay, I'm still not an avid fan of the Coliseum. There are too many
people, booths that I'm not interested in (I'm not going to buy a
heater, but that's just me), and a lot of standing around or trying to
push through crowds. Not that I wouldn't go for the fudge if I had
extra money.
I never liked the downstairs. I never not-liked the games and rides,
either, to be fair. And it's not a big part of the fun that I get from
going to the fair nowadays. I just like walking about and looking at
what's to see and talking with who's there to talk. But. I am
getting... far off the point.
The downstairs of the Coliseum. The place where they have crops and
cakes and flowers. Doesn't sound like much, does it? It doesn't. But
it's interesting.
I find myself particularly smitten with the smallest crops - the
smallest, best cherry tomatoes or the tiniest squash. I like farming,
in a pinch; I used to have my own little garden. So, it's interesting
to see all the good crops at the Coliseum.
Next, the pastries. The cakes are amazing. I love baking (not
particularly good at it!), so it's wonderful to see the cakes that
people have spent so much time on. It makes me a bit jealous - wish I
could decorate like that! - but it's great to see talent around our
areas. And the pies and cupcakes and cheesecakes all look delicious.
Makes you want to go home and bake!
And then flowers and art displays. I managed to get a few pictures of
the flowers that were found in the downstairs this fair-go-round. My
favorite ones were the pink ones that have been captured in a picture
below. Yeah, "pink ones". I don't know anything about flowers. They're
beautiful, they irritate allergies to an extent, true, but they're so
nice to look at.
So, that's the downstairs of the fair this year. Next year, if any of
this interested you, head on down there and take a look through the
crops, large and small, the food, look but don't touch! And the art
displays so intricate. Even if you don't know much about any of those
topics, it doesn't mean that you can't appreciate them.
And the people who entered the displays surely deserve that
appreciation.
