Mississinawa Valley Staff Spotlight
MVHS teacher enjoying his “second” career
By Kara Jessup
Teen Correspondent

“I love it here” says Dean Waggenspack, teacher at Mississinawa Valley. Dean has been a teacher for three years, one year at MVCTC where he taught personal finance and how to use Microsoft Applications. He is now going on his second year teaching at MV high school.

Mississinawa Valley offers a wide variety of classes taught by Waggenspack, from personal finance, to college readiness. Personal finance teaches kids to manage their money, while college readiness helps students choose a college and find scholarships that they qualify for.

Dean received his Bachelor’s degree at Mount Union College in Alliance, Ohio, and then went to get his Masters Degree at Duke University.

Before Dean became a teacher, he worked for NCR Corporation, a global company that makes cash registers and ATMs.  He got the chance to travel to countries like England, Spain, Czech Republic, Germany, Singapore, and Australia to train new employees at other NCR operations.

In his spare time, Dean likes to go running. He has been in 15 marathons, which is 26.2 miles. One of the most famous marathons he has run in was in Boston. Another hobby of his is taking ballroom dance lessons with his wife. They attend classes where they learned the fox trot, rumba, swing dance, and the cha cha.

Sports have played a big role in Waggenspack’s life. His favorite sport is College basketball with his favorite team being Duke. Years ago, Dean coached basketball at Kettering Fairmont High School, while also being a referee. He also enjoys watching football and baseball.

Spending time with family is important to Dean. His wife, Rose, is a massage therapist. Together, they have 4 children. Courtney, 28, is a middle school math teacher in Bronx, NY. Stephen, 26, is a financial analyst in Dayton, OH. Nathan, 23, lives in Craig, CO where he is a journalist. Luke, 20, is a junior at Butler University in Indianapolis.
