A Centennial
Mangas Reunion… 1,100 descendents and counting
By Elaine Bailey
A Centennial Mangas Reunion will be held on Saturday, July 6 at the
Lisbon Church located north of Union City, Indiana.
The reunion will honor shared heritage and celebrate families and
children… the twenty-first century descendants of Jacob and
Elizabeth (Hoke) Mangas.
In 1831, Jacob Mangas and his wife, Elizabeth Hoke Mangas, Pennsylvania
Germans, emigrated from York County, Pennsylvania, to Richland County,
Ohio and then six years later moved to Randolph County, Indiana.
Jacob and Elizabeth were the parents of eleven children, nine of whom
lived beyond infancy. Emanuel, Sarah, Casper, Jacob, Eli,
Abraham, Absalom, and Samuel grew into adulthood. Twin infants
are buried in the old section of the Lisbon Cemetery. It is there
that the original German spelling of the family name is recorded:
MENGES.
The first Mangas reunion was held in August 1913 in the grove on the
Mangas home place, one mile north of Lisbon. At that time, the
local Union City Times reported 214 descendants.
Two of the brothers, Jacob Jr. and Samuel, left Randolph County and
settled in Logan County, Illinois. The remaining sister and
brothers stayed in the Randolph County and Darke County, Ohio area.
The reunion will include numerous activities. Co-chairs for the
event are looking for families or family members interested in chairing
or serving on various committees.
Additional information is available by calling 937.547.9912, emailing

With only 50 percent of the eight generations recorded at this time,
the total number of descendants in 2013 is nearing 1,100. In an
effort to account for as many descendants as possible, organizers would
appreciate any assistance in updating the family lines.
CDs containing the family tree dating back to the mid 1700s and photos
will be available at the event.
