District POP Tournament
Competition tough in
2013 Power of the Pen
By Bob Robinson
Two Darke County
Students take home honors: Jacob Troutwine, DeColores Montessori and
Emily Hammer, Mississinawa Valley
A young man wakes up in a hospital bed and discovers bandages on his
leg and arm. The news on the television talks about a massacre at a
local school…
It isn’t surprising that an eighth grade student would choose that
topic for a writing scenario in this year’s District Power of the Pen.
It’s still on the minds of adults and students alike. It was Minster’s
Colleen Jutte’s shocking ending, along with a compelling narrative,
that earned her First Place in the Power of the Pen’s Eighth Grade Best
of Round One competition.
Competition is always tough in annual Power of the Pen tournaments;
this year’s at Botkins Local School proved to be tougher than usual.
In most of the Best of Rounds, there were typically several essays that
could have taken first place. But only one could be chosen. In the
Grade Seven individual competition, the top four students each had
number one rankings in every prompt. Out of 1,800 points, the top two
Grade Seven teams were only 10 points apart. The top two Grade Eight
teams were only five points apart.
Among more than 150 students from 16 school districts, the winners were
as follows:
Teams: Coldwater Middle School took the top Grade Seven honors,
followed by Minster Middle School, Fort Loramie HS and New Bremen
Middle School. Fort Loramie HS took top honors for the Grade Eight
competition, followed by Minster Middle School, Piqua Catholic and
Coldwater Middle School.
Best of Round Grade Seven: Round 1 went to Emily Hammer, Mississinawa
Valley; Round 2: Katie Paulus, New Bremen and Round 3: Hattie Meyer,
Fort Loramie. Honorable Mentions: Roxanne Roessner, Coldwater,
Madeleine Erb, New Bremen and Caroline Moorman, Coldwater.
Best of Round Grade Eight: Round 1 went to Colleen Jutte, Minster;
Round 2: Jacob Troutwine, De Colores Montessori and Round 3: Alexa
Paulus, New Bremen. Honorable Mentions: Nick Chalk, Minster and Cameron
Roller, Troy Christian.
In Grade Seven individual competition, the top four had identical Total
Points, and only a 4-point spread in Quality Points. The top 15, in
order, were Erin Keller, Minster, Bryn Dippold, Coldwater Middle, Katie
Paulus, New Bremen Middle, Caitlin Bollheimer, Fort Loramie HS, Maya
Watercutter, Minster Middle, Madeleine Erb, New Bremen Middle, Kameron
Lee, Piqua Catholic, Ally Cisco, Anna Middle, Lauren Brubaker Houston
Middle, Hattie Meyer, Fort Loramie HS, Hanna Cassel, Houston Middle,
Olivia Ewry, Botkins Local, Sophia Albers, Fort Loramie HS, Sam Bitze,
Holy Angels, and Allison Grieshop, Minster Middle.
In Grade Eight individual competition, the top six were separated by a
10 point spread. The top 15, in order, are Jacob Troutwine, DeColores
Montessori, Alexa Paulus, New Bremen Middle, Sarah Kramer, New Bremen
Middle, Hunter Barga, Fort Loramie HS, Cortney Hasenjager, Coldwater
Middle, Kennedy Hoying, New Bremen Middle, Liz Pax, Piqua Catholic,
Maddi Fortman, Fort Laramie HS, Maddi Stewert, Minster Middle, Sable
Hudson, Minster Middle, Jordan Sailer, New Bremen Middle, Hallie
Sherman, Minster Middle, Amber Ferguson, Botkins Local, Colleen Jutte,
Minster Middle, and Kayla Rosengarten, Fort Loramie HS.
According to Host School Coordinator Paula Owens, about half of the
competing students will advance to the Regional Tournaments. Winners of
those competitions will advance to State.
Darke County Schools competing in this year’s tournament were:
Bradford, DeColores Montessori, Mississinawa Valley and Franklin Monroe.
