Senior FITness…
wellness into the future
By Bob Robinson
GREENVILLE - “We want to help everyone die young at an old age,” said
Dr. Tom Sattler on May 23. He was a speaker at Brethren Retirement
Community’s introductory luncheon for its new Senior FITness Center.
That afternoon a Ribbon Cutting was held by the Darke County Chamber of
Commerce.
Sattler, a member of the National Fitness Hall of Fame and spokesperson
for Reliance Rehabilitation, said “we d0n’t stop giving because we stop
living… we stop living because we stop giving.”
Sattler told the group the mind tells the body how old it is.
“We have the capability to ‘stay young,’” he said. “And we all have the
ability to bounce back.”
Sattler told the group there are women 107, 108 years old who are doing
weight lifting and are sharp as a tack.
“We want our seniors to live the life of success,” he said. “The only
way to accomplish that is with a change in attitude.”
A hundred years ago, he said, 85 percent of all accomplishment was by
human effort. Today, it’s 90 percent technical progress. He added that
today, the biggest problem was people expect too much of us and not
enough of themselves.
Sattler focused on four words the new health center will address:
health, wellness, exercise and fitness.
Senior FITness is an integrative approach… baby steps with models
designed for everyone. Health is the baseline, he added. Whatever is
wrong is subtracted from that.
At the ribbon cutting BRC President and CEO John Warner said the new
Senior FITness area was already a hit, with 70 residents signed up in
the past three weeks.
He added the Brethren Retirement Community has had a good working
relationship with Reliance Rehabilitation for the past 10 years.
“We are delighted to have them here putting this program into place for
us,” Warner added. He said the Center is another part of “our ongoing
journey into senior wellness.”
Sattler told the group the Center is now available to all residents in
the community.
“By this weekend we expected to have over 100 people signed up,” he
said.
