Gehret crowned Miss Chick 2013

VERSAILLES – “Do fairy tales have a positive or negative influence on young girls?”

Lauren Gehret said she had heard them all as she was growing up. Unrealistic? I don’t think so…

“It gives girls something to hope for, to dream about. If there were no fairy tales there would be no magic.”

About 15 minutes later Lauren was crowned Miss Chick 2013.

Six contestants vied for the crown at Versailles Poultry Days on June 15. All had to pull an “egg,” or question, they had to answer for the judges. The second round of questions included the appropriate age for social media, combatting destructive thoughts about your body, the effect of electronic communications on your generation and more.

Named to Lauren’s court were Kristen Collins, first runner-up, and Jaclyn Lawrence, second runner-up.

Lauren is the daughter of Ron and Mary Gehret and was sponsored by Pepcon. Kristen is the daughter of Brian and Tammy Collins and was sponsored by Towne & Country Players. Jaclyn is the daughter of Steve and Darlene Lawrence and was sponsored by Creative Visions Photography.

Additional contestants were Rachel Osterloh, daughter of Luke and Sharon Osterloh, sponsored by Versailles Busy Beavers; Malinda Barlage, daughter of Tony and Kris Barlage, sponsored by Versailles FFA; and Olivia Schlater, daughter of Joe and Lynne Schlater, sponsored by VHS Student Council.

All contestants are from Versailles.

According to event coordinator Amanda Borchers, this was a low number this year but the quality of contestants was high.

“Typically we have 10 to 15 contestants,” she said. “But these are great young ladies… it’s going to be tough for the judges.”

She added that the pageant is open to all girls 16 to 18, noting it was unusual to only have girls from Versailles.

“There were many years in the past when a Versailles girl seldom won.”

She said there would be a stronger push next year to get contestants from other schools.

Amanda and her sister, Madelyn, who is coordinating the event with her, are both past Miss Chicks.

“I won it in 2005. Madelyn won it in 2006,” she said. “It was wonderful being able to put the crown on my sister’s head.”

The sisters took over the pageant in 2008. Participating in the ceremony were Eric Stachler, 2013 Poultry Days Chairman, Keith Rawlins, Master of Ceremony, and Kelly Murphy, Miss Chick 2012, and her court, first runner-up Andrea Schmitmeyer and second runner-up Summer Condon.

In addition to questions and answers for the candidates, former Miss Chicks talked about their experiences and Rawlins interviewed Little Miss Poultry Days, Alivia Addis.
