Greenville High School
Senior Awards
Night celebrates Class of 2013 accomplishments
By Bob Robinson
GREENVILLE – More than 40 students were acknowledged for their
accomplishments May 23 at the Greenville High School gymnasium.
Throughout the two-hour event, Pursue Excellence, 40 organizations
handed out scholarship awards in the tens of thousand of dollars to
graduating seniors.
Jesse Green honored 38 seniors, noting that 2013 was “Mandy’s Year,”
the year Mandy Green would have graduated if she had lived.
“This is a very compassionate class,” he said. “You were part of
Mandy’s life. I believe your compassion is, at least in part, a result
of having her in your lives.”
As the 38 students received their awards and left the stage, the
audience gave them a standing ovation. Green said that in the last
seven years, over $78,000 in Mandy Green Memorial Scholarships have
been awarded.
The HOPE Foundation made its annual scholarship presentation to 15
students. Travis Fliehman said the Foundation has donated $150,000 to
Darke County students, with $13,500 this year.
In presenting the Presbyterian scholarships, Charlene Thornhill noted
that over $227,000 has been given out since 1974.
Scholarships ranging from several hundred dollars up to $10,000 over a
four-year period, including matching funds from a college, were awarded
to students throughout the evening.
Following the presentation of awards, GHS Principal Ken Neff announced
the Class of 2013 Valedictorian Erica Waller and Salutatorian Trevor
Fulton.
GSD Supt. Doug Fries opened the evening with a call to support the GSD
Levy in August, noting that strong schools promote a strong community.
“It’s our turn,” he said.
