BBBS Match of
the Month
Wednesday, April 23, 2014
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Shelby & Darke County announce Big
Sister, Betty Miars, and Little Sister, Sarah Beck, have been selected
as April Match of the Month. Betty & Sarah have been matched
in the Big Brothers Big Sisters program since May, 2009, therefore will
be celebrating their 5 year match anniversary together next month,
along with Sarah’s graduation from Sidney High School.
Betty appreciates having a Little Sister with such a pleasant
personality, a great interest in school, and who is good at engaging in
conversation. They enjoy eating out, shopping, and attending BBBS
group activities together and meet two or three times per month. Betty
has enjoyed watching Sarah grow into a positive, education minded
individual and has helped Sarah achieve her goals of going on to
college in the fall at Kent State University. Betty reported, “I
am very proud of Sarah and the hard work she has put into her academics
to make this happen.” As a caring Big Sister, Betty has offered
to keep track of community service hours to help Sara’s college
scholarship application process.
Sarah is in 12th grade at Sidney High School. This year she is
involved as a Big Buddy mentor through the Big Brothers Big Sisters big
buddies program and is also involved in the Key Club at school. Sarah
was recently awarded a scholarship that will help her achieve her goal
of going on to college this coming fall.
Sarah is feeling a special friendship developing with her Big Sister,
and she loves the activities they do together. She appreciates
that they have a lot in common, in spite of a few years difference in
their ages.
Clarissa Beck, Sarah’s mom, added, “Betty is awesome! They are a
match made for each other.” Sarah has two brothers also in the
BBBS program.
This is a great line up for a successful match: a caring
volunteer who is a positive role model, a cooperative Little Sister
with many interests, and a supportive family.
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Shelby & Darke County is a nonprofit
United Way member, social service agency. The program specializes in
mentoring children from “at risk” families with adult volunteer big
brothers and sisters. These adults provide children with positive role
modeling, as well as new educational and social activities. If you
would like to make the difference in the life of a child but are unable
to volunteer at this time, Big Brothers Big Sisters has many other
opportunities throughout the year for others to become involved.
