Child abuse and
neglect awareness gets proclamation, pinwheels

GREENVILLE – Fifteen community and elected leaders gathered around the
Darke County Commissioners to proclaim April as Child Abuse and Neglect
Awareness Month. Five hours later four members of the Banner Bound 4H
Club, along with a few helpers, placed 462 pinwheels on the lawn
between the Darke County Courthouse and the Commissioners Building.
The purpose, according to Darke County Job & Family Services
(DCJFS) Social Services Administrator, Rebecca James, was to raise
public awareness of the issue. The sign in the middle of the pinwheels
said: “In 2013 Children Services served 1,950 adults and children. They
had 901 intake concerns of abuse, neglect and dependency.”
Twelve children were removed from their home in 2013. This is the
highest number in eight years, James said in a press release. In most
cases, alcohol and substance abuse were contributing factors impacting
child safety...
