Friday Sampler
worth braving the weather
By Elaine Bailey
Due to heavy rains throughout the night and showers during the morning,
the attendance, as compared to previous years, also dropped.
However, the first program for the annual Friday Sampler at the Great
Darke County Fair, proved to be worth every raindrop and mud puddle
that the participants experienced on their trek to the youth building.
The room was filled with cheery inspiration as Raine Hunt Longfellow
shared creative ways to revamp vintage.
One of twelve siblings, she learned to, as she quoted from an ole World
War II adage, “Use it up, Wear it out, Make do, or Do without.”
Her “Revamped Vintage on Parade” included clothing made from calendar
towels, chenille bedspreads, quilts, doilies, tablecloths, and feed
sacks. Her most unusual technique was using Kool-Aid to dye
cloth. She also creates jewelry from broken pieces of china,
silverware, or scraps of vintage lace.
Raine shared, with a break in her voice, that her husband of five
years, Terry Longfellow, provides tremendous loving support.
Terry also participates in the creative venture by designing
hand-carved knives and utensils from various hardwoods.
Anyone interested in her designs can follow her on the Etsy website or
Etsy Facebook page.
Other presenters during The Friday Sampler included “Family in the
Kitchen” by Trish Wolford (Brownie Bites) and Becky Brandon (Peppermint
Scrubs) from KitchenAid in downtown Greenville, Ohio; “How Yoga Fits
You,” presented by Emily Jasenski, owner and director of elementsLife
Yoga & Wellness in Greenville, Ohio; and Steve Stone, of Nature’s
Green in Fort Recovery, Ohio on “What’s Trending Now?”
Door prizes throughout the day were generously provided by:

Real, Fairlawn Steak House, GNC, Goody’s, Great Clips, Helen’s Flowers,
Hibbett Sports, JT Brew & Grill, Montage, Nature’s Green,
