at annual Veterans Day service
GREENVILLE – “We lost more of our veterans by their own hand than we
lost in Afghanistan,” said Dennis Dickey, 1st Vice President for the
American Legion 3rd District. “Only those who have been through what
many of these veterans have can understand that.” Dickey was the guest
speaker for the 2014 Veterans Day Memorial Service at the Darke County
Fair.
Dickey is the brother of Douglas E. Dickey, who was posthumously
awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor in 1967 for heroism during
Operation Beacon Hill 1 in Vietnam. A comment heard from a veteran
attending the service: “He gave his life saving others. This Memorial
Service is for him and those others who served honorably.”
During his presentation Dickey offered a quote by 2010 Chief of Central
Command General James Mattis, who had a reputation for blunt speaking…
“Be polite, be professional but have a plan to kill everybody you
meet.” This was a survival tool for those in combat.
As they have in years past, units from American Legion posts, American
Legion Auxiliary units, VFW posts and more marched into the Grandstand
track to open the Darke County Veterans Day Memorial Service. Outgoing
County Commander (all posts in the county) Ken Preston, Sr., welcomed
the audience, then introduced Past Darke County Commander John Grillot
for introduction of the units...
