parade honors veterans
UNION CITY – Horns and sirens announced its start before the lead
vehicles were visible; seconds later flashing red lights in the
distance provided their support. At exactly 1 p.m. Aug. 2 the 2014
State Line Heritage Days Grand Parade had begun. Spectators lined both
sides of the street for the hour-long parade, with all standing as the
flag and this year’s Parade Marshalls, Vietnam veterans, passed by.
According to Cindi Aukerman, the parade committee has honored its vets
each of the last two years: first the World War II veterans, last year
the Korean veterans.
Spectators had been gathering for nearly an hour; they’d gotten their
treats from local vendors just off the parade route. All ages were
represented but those most anxious were among the younger set. They
were waiting for the candy...
