A Summer’s
Sunday Night in Greenville
By Sharon Hopper
Seven years ago we moved to Greenville and began going to the summer
Sunday Night park concerts. I always wondered why there were so few in
attendance every Sunday night. Sometimes I would count only 20 or so
people on the benches and maybe 30 or so in the lawn chairs. Well
something happened this year and I have to say it is really a good
something.
We started going to the park for the first concert, July 6 this year
and have gone every single week of the concert season. To my surprise
the concerts were well attended and every week the crowd seemed to
grow, which is unusual for this type of activity. I even noticed that
there were younger people in the audience, in fact some children have
been in attendance. My firsts thought was am I going crazy? What is
going on?
This past Sunday night was quite an experience. The bench seats were
rather full and the part sitters were in abundance. Parking was in the
school lot in addition to every available park space. And the band…
Well let me just say JR Price did a marvelous job of putting the music
together and bringing the musicians together in beautiful harmony. I
really think that part of the reason for such perfection was being and
feeling appreciated by the community. Everyone seemed to be at his or
her best. Greenville needs to be proud of the Sunday Night concerts and
continue with the great public relations that seem to have been a large
part of attendance. And of course we can thank the weather as it has
been nearly perfect for every performance. Even the bugs took a break
this year. There seems to be a shift in the air where real music that
one can understand is catching on again. Lets just hope that we can
keep it going and growing. Great Job Greenville Concert Band.
