Jessica Barry talks
about being a BenGal, working with students and bad design

When Jessica Barry enrolled in the School of Advertising Art to become
a graphic designer, she never imagined she'd one day be the president
and owner of the school.
Looking back, the 37-year-old says she's surprised with where her
career took her.
I was surprised to, since I had no idea it involved a seven-year stint
as a cheerleader for the Cincinnati Bengals.
But she's happy with where she has ended up, because she enjoys working
with students. Barry sat down with me for a few minutes to talk about
traveling around the world, bad design and working with students.
Q: What's your favorite thing about the job?
A: Being the first person to tell a student they have what it takes to
be successful in this industry. Many of them have taken traditional art
classes and don't know anyone in the industry.
Q: So you traveled a lot as a BenGal. What place inspired you the most?
A: Austria was my favorite. It's so beautiful. The architecture in
Austria is completely inspiring and mind boggling. I've also been to
Iceland and the modern design there — even in the airport — the amount
of effort they put into design, it's where every graphic designer would
want to live.
Q: What keeps you in Dayton?
A: I left and went to Cincinnati for eight years. I came back because I
love the people and the overall energy. There's so many young aspiring
creatives...
