Edison students
celebrate conquering their fears
GREENVILLE – On Dec. 8 sixteen Edison Community College public speaking
students met for the final group phase of their 16-week course. The
meeting was referred to as “adjourning.” It is a group process defined
as wrapping up the term, celebrating their accomplishments and moving
on to the next stage of their lives, in this case their educational and
career pursuits.
According to NewsWireToday public speaking is the “number one fear of
the majority of people.” Psychology Today says many fear it more than
death. On Aug. 25 and 26, 36 students in three different classes stood
in front of their classmates for the first time, beginning what some
thought was going to be one of the more devastating challenges of their
lives…
“At the beginning of the year I used to shake, get a stomach ache and
almost cry,” said one student. She admitted to actually breaking into
tears during one of her speeches. Another student said he would sweat,
turn red and be “just as nervous as ever.” Most students admitted to
nervousness, some more than others. “The first time I had to get up in
front of the class I was extremely nervous,” said another. “My hands
were sweaty and I was shaking fiercely by the time I was done…
