Kiwanis celebrates
Christmas with the Wavaires
GREENVILLE – “Joyful all ye nations rise… Join the triumph of the
skies…” This Christmas favorite was one of a variety of Christmas
selections – some lesser known, some traditional – the Greenville High
School Wavaires offered to members and guests of Kiwanis of Greenville
Dec. 17.
The annual Christmas event also included a unique and moving version of
“Silent Night.” The first verse was sung in its native German (Stille
Nacht, heilige Nacht), written in 1818 by Franz Xaver Gruber. The
second verse was sung in English, the third humming… all three verses
were accompanied using sign language (signing). The fourth time was
silent, using signing only.
According to Wavaires Director Chelsea Whirledge, in the past 10 years
or so it has become a tradition to sing the Christmas hymn in all four
phases…
