T-V senior chooses
Marines, learns about Dickey
GREENVILLE – Do you know who PFC Douglas Dickey is? Ecko Brown, an
Edison Communications student and Tri-Village senior in the PSEOP
program, shook her head. Want to find out? “Sure.” She went to Garst
Museum. It was a sobering experience.
“Scary, but so honorable,” she said, noting Dickey’s actions. PFC
Dickey was an Ansonia native and U.S. Marine posthumously awarded the
Medal of Honor.
Ecko has enlisted in the Marines; she’ll be sworn in after graduation.
“It was a hard decision,” she said. “I’m a successful athlete, class
Valedictorian and I’ve had many college offers.” She said she visited
the campuses. “It just didn’t feel right.”
Is the Marines a career choice? “I don’t know if anyone can make a
career choice when they’re just starting out,” she said. “After four
years I can. Also I can go to college on the G.I. bill… it will be paid
for.”
Ecko said she wanted to travel. She’d never been outside of Ohio
(except for sports), and she wanted to help people. She knew no matter
what role she is chosen to play in the marines she’d be part of the
military support system. Combat duty? “I could handle that,” she said.
“That’s what I’ll be trained for.”
A friend of hers had told her about Boot Camp. She smiled. “That will
be the toughest thing I’ll have faced so far in my life. It kind of
excites me. I like challenges.”
Ecko couldn’t choose a career path until she’d been sworn in. She
believes she’ll get that option. “I tested high enough,” she said,
noting a 45 was required. She scored a 78. “My recruiter said that’s
pretty good for an 18-year-old female.” He asked her if she studied for
