‘Investment of the
heart’ provides joy a hundred-fold
ANSONIA – “It doesn’t have to be big to win,” said Scott Phillips, host
of Public Television’s American Woodshop. “It’s the idea behind it…”
His point was made as the top award in Ansonia Lumber Company’s annual
Toy Contest Dec. 13 went to Harry Niswonger for his intricately carved
scale tractor (“it even has GPS coordinates”). ‘Large’ took second
place with Harold Alley’s kitchen set. The next three winning entries
were, in order, John Burnett’s drum set, Ken Pense’s Chinese checkers
and Charles Foreman’s Noah’s Ark.
Phillips had a tough time choosing the best entries, noting all the
talent in the room. Of the 43 toys being donated to the U.S. Marine
Corps Reserve’s Toys for Tots program, 20 had been submitted for
judging. “Think about the time going into making these,” he said,
adding there had to be well over 2,000 hours invested in them.
“You won’t see this in Los Angeles. You won’t see it in New York City.
Where will you see it? Right here in Ansonia. Darke County, Ohio. The
Midwest. We know how to put other people first…
