GREENVILLE
– Fourth time is a charm. After three postponements due to
inclement weather, the 2014 Greenville District Spelling Bee finally
happened Jan. 30. The winners were Landon Brown, Greenville Junior
High School, first; Natalie Milligan, Montesori School, second; and
Caleb Coppess, South School, third. Schools participating were
Greenville Junior High, South and East schools, Montesori School and
Greenville St. Mary’s School.
Greenville
Junior High Principal Chris Mortensen welcomed the 12 students,
noting they were the “Best of the Best of the District.” It took
several rounds to eliminate all but the last two students, Landon and
Natalie. Landon took home the honors by correctly spelling
“anticipatory.”
Edwinna
Thomas, East School Literacy Coach, read off the words to the
students. She acknowledged their difficulty.
“These
are tough words,” she said. “They’re given to us by Scripps
National Spelling Bee.” She added they do spelling bees in the
classroom, then the school holds a spelling bee. The top two go to
the District competition at Memorial Hall. Landon’s next step will
be the Regional Competition.
“We
give them a complete list of the words the National uses to study…
they have a lot of words,” Thomas added.
In
addition to the winners, the top students in their respective schools
are Hunter Class, Hunter Cuyler, Isabelle Rammel, Landen Kreusch,
Jake Barr, Ashley Strosnider, Connor Kerns, Emily Marchal and Mariah
Nicholas.
