DeColores, Versailles take honors at 2014 POP
Fort Loramie JHS top 7th, Tippecanoe Middle School top 8th grade teams

DARKE COUNTY – DeColores Montessori of Greenville and Versailles Middle School took multiple honors Feb. 15 at the 2014 District Power of the Pen Competition in Botkins. Among the top award winners were Hunter Cuyler at DeColores, Lauren Durham, Versailles and the Eighth Grade Team of Versailles.

Cuyler won Best of Round 1 for his essay on an item no longer wanted by its owners. He also took top writing honors for the seventh grade competition with a composite score of the maximum 300 points. Durham took fifth place in the eighth grade competition with a composite score of 284 points, while the eighth grade Versailles team, coached by Deb Tyo took second place in the competition with a total point ranking of 1605.

Placing in the top 10 for eighth grade were Andrew Heckman, tied for 7th, and Tessa Tyo, 8th, each with 290 composite points out of 300. Both are students at Versailles. Tyo also received an Honorable Mention for Round 1 Best of Round.

Districts participating in the 2014 Power of the Pen District competition were Bradford Schools, DeColores Montessori School, Franklin Monroe Local School, Mississinawa Valley Local School, Versailles Middle School, Anna Middle School, Botkins Local School, Coldwater Middle School, Fort Loramie JHS, Houston Middle School, Jackson Center Schools, Minster Middle School, New Bremen Middle and Tippecanoe Middle School.

The top four seventh grade teams were: Tippecanoe Middle School, Versailles Middle School, Fort Loramie JHS and New Bremen Middle. The top four eighth grade teams were: Fort Loramie JHS, Minster Middle School, Tippecanoe Middle School and Anna Middle School.

Best of Round winners for seventh grade were: Hunter Cuyler, DeColores; Riley Middendorf, Fort Loramie; and Riley Swaitout, Tippecanoe. Best of Round winners for eighth grade were: Katie Paulus, New Bremen; Bryan Dippold, Coldwater; and Olivia Edry, Botkins.

Top 12 seventh grade contestants were: Hunter Cuyler, DeColores; Riley Middendorf, Fort Loramie; Gina Langenkamp, Coldwater; Michelle Altstaetter, Botkins; Joe Ballas, Fort Loramie; Tori Barge, Fort Loramie; Addie White, Houston; Annie Livesay, Tippecanoe; Ashleigh Jurosic, Anna; Chloe Stang, Fort Loramie; Madeline Magoto, Minster; and Maddie May, Tippecanoe.

Top 12 eighth grade contestants were: Bryn Dippold, Coldwater; Brooke Raterman, Fort Loramie; Taylor Hudson, Tippecanoe; Lauren Wyant, Tippecanoe; Lauren Durham, Versailles; Abby Walker, Tippecanoe; Andrew Heckman, Versailles; Alissa Buynak, Tippecanoe; Tessa Tyo, Versailles; Katie Paulus, New Bremen; Madeleine Erb, New Bremen; Hattie Meyer, Fort Loramie; and Adrienne Laughman, New Bremen.

Point rankings are determined by a team of judges. Best of Round judges for 2014 were Elaine Schweller-Snyder, journalism teacher and yearbook advisor at Leyman Catholic School, Patricia Ann Speelman, Local Life Editor at Sidney Daily News and Bob Robinson, Associate Editor at The Early Bird, Greenville.
