Upper Valley Career Center Students
Edison Community College hosted 19 Upper Valley Career Center (Upper
Valley CC) Medical Information Management students on May 2, 2014 at
the Piqua campus. During the visit, students learned about Edison’s
Medical Assisting program.
While on campus, Upper Valley CC students toured classrooms and labs,
participated in hands-on demonstrations given by Edison students, and
learned more about how the education they’re receiving from Upper
Valley CC creates a pathway into Edison’s Medical Assisting program.
“This activity is a wonderful example of how we can make use of all
resources to engage students in the learning process and assist them in
understanding pathways for educational progression,” said Gwen
Stevenson, Dean of Nursing and Health Sciences. “We are very fortunate
to have so many quality programs in our area and to have faculty and
administrators who are willing to work collaboratively towards a common
goal of quality education and student success.”
Upper Valley CC students witnessed first-hand how to administer
intramuscular injections, obtain vital signs, perform vision screening,
performing pulmonary function tests, venipuncture, and appropriate
personal protective equipment.
“Not only is this a great opportunity for the students at Upper Valley
Career Center, this event also gives Edison’s Medical Assisting
students a wonderful opportunity to teach others, just as they will be
providing important patient education in the field,” said Heather
Young, Director of Medical Assisting.
Edison and Upper Valley CC have worked closely to help provide students
a seamless transition from high school to college. Between the
institutions, students are able to complete their education at Upper
Valley CC while in high school and finish an Associates of Technical
Studies degree at Edison in as little as two years or a certificate in
as little as one year. Students are given the choice of attending day
or evening classes at a full or part-time capacity.
