By Jaime Wombolt
On April 24, the Senior Scribes Scholarship Fund came together to
celebrate its annual Awards Banquet Dinner. This dinner was to
recognize and award yet another seven local Darke County students with
a $1,000 college scholarship.
The event, held at the Bistro off Broadway courtesy of Ted Abney,
offered a delicious meal followed by the welcome and introduction from
Senior Scribes President Elaine Bailey.
Although not each of the recipients was able to attend the event, the
ceremony that followed the meal personally recognized and introduced
the scholarship recipients.
The County News Online scholarship award was awarded to Jessica Barga.
Unfortunately Jessica was unable to attend the event, but she is a
junior at Miami University and is pursuing her degree in Marketing and
Journalism.
The Early Bird, Blue Bag Media, Bistro of Broadway, County News Online,
and Paul Ackley Award, presented by Keith Foutz and Paul Ackley, was
awarded to Eric Swartz. Eric stated, “It is a great privilege to
receive this scholarship, and I am very grateful for the Senior
Scribes, and to the businesses and individuals that make this
possible.” Eric is attending Edison Community College pursuing a degree
in Business Management Marketing.
The Biddlestone Memorial In Memory of Ralph “Fred” and Donna Wright was
awarded to Cassidy Condon who also was also unable to attend the event.
Cassidy is planning to attend Ohio State University while majoring in
communications. Cassidy’s award will be presented at the Versailles
High School Senior Awards Night.
The Bistro off Broadway Scholarship, presented by Ted Abney, was
awarded to Makayla Wilson. This is Makayla’s third year of being
awarded with a scholarship. Makayla attends the University of
Cincinnati while pursuing a degree in Veterinary Technology.
The Delbert Blickenstaff Memorial scholarship was presented by Louise
Blickenstaff and awarded to John Liette, “It is a real honor that this
is the third year I have been chosen for a scholarship. Thank you.”
John is a sophomore at Ball State University and he is majoring in
Communication Disorders/Speech Pathologist.
The Al and Barbara Greiner Scholarship, presented by Al and Barbara
Greiner, was awarded to Will McCabe. Will commented, “Thank you to the
Senior Scribes and everyone involved for this.” Will is planning to
attend Ohio Northern University while majoring in Creative Writing and
Ministry.
The Senior Scribes Scholarship was awarded to Nicole Manges. Nicole was
also unable to attend the event. She plans to attend Huntington
University while pursuing a career as an editor in public
communications. Nicole’s scholarship will be awarded at
Greenville High School’s Senior Awards Night.
As the evening came to an end friends and visitors mingled and enjoyed
each other's company. A special thanks was offered to Ted Abney and the
Bistro Staff for the amazing meal and professional service. To all
sponsors and donors for the continued support of the SSSF mission. To
Bob Robinson, CNO editor, for his six years of overseeing County News
Online, with net proceeds being donated to SSSF. To the CNO staff
and volunteers for supporting the day-to-day business demands of online
publishing. And to the Senior Scribes for their ongoing support of
projects encouraging others in the field of journalism and other
related fields of communication.
President of the Senior Scribes, Elaine Bailey adds, “The Senior
Scribes Scholarship Fund (SSSF) directors are pleased to have provided
seven, scholastically ambitious students with the means to further or
continue their pursuit of higher education. We are indebted to
the generous contributions of many individuals. These individuals
may have sponsored a one thousand dollar scholarship or may be part of
a significant group of unnamed individuals making donations directly to
the SSSF or County News Online, a fundraising project for SSSF.
We thank all of these donors for supporting our mission.”
