Mildred Dill takes
first selfie at 101
On September 10, 2014, Mrs. Mildred Dill celebrated her 101st birthday
and then made history with taking her first ever selfie! When
Kristy Earick, Administrator at Versailles Health Care Center, asked
Dill if she wanted to take a “selfie” with her, Dill agreed but then
wanted to know more. Earick explained a selfie is a
self-photograph taken with a hand-held digital camera or camera phone
held at arm’s length and often shared on social networking services
such as Facebook and Twitter. Dill was surprised that Earick
could take a picture with her phone and exclaimed “Well oh my
goodness! The things you can do.”
Mrs. Dill was born on September 10, 1913 in Kansas. Mildred is
the widow of Nolan Leichty with whom she had one daughter, Rochelle
Schlecty, and four sons, Evan, Lester, Keenan and Forest Leichty.
Mildred’s second husband, Joe Dill, is also deceased. She has
numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and
great-great-grandchildren. She was a homemaker and worked at
Murphy’s store in Greenville for 25 years. Mildred was also a
volunteer at Wayne Hospital for 25 years. Versailles Health Care
Center, a skilled nursing and rehabilitation center, has been home to
Mrs. Dill for the past seven years. When not taking selfies, Dill
enjoys playing bingo and sending out greeting cards to her family and
friends.
