East kids get a
carnival break before the holiday
GREENVILLE – “Showtime,” said one of the teachers at East Intermediate
School. Within seconds dozens of kids came charging out the gym where
they’d been waiting for the “go” signal. The East School Carnival had
begun.
It was the last day of school before the Christmas break (Dec. 19) and
the students who earned it got to take an hour out of their work
schedule for fun and games. They went through the first floor hallways
and library (or back to the gym for the dance contest) checking out
various games, from the “hit the pins” game to shuffleboard and the
numbers walk.
According to Shawna Wise, Greenville Schools Paraprofessional, her 36
student council members planned the games and were running them. “They
laid the games out, created them; there were no arguments… it was very
organized. And they did this over a two-hour period.” Wise grinned.
“This is the best group I’ve ever had,” she said.
This is the eighth year they’ve held the carnival. “We used to do it in
the evening,” Wise added. “Now we do it on the last day… that way we
don’t have to worry about transportation or kids missing out because
they can’t get here.”
All games had prizes. They ranged from pencils and trinkets to some
interesting and colorful options, such as annoying orange markers,
smencils, cherry twists and chocolate calculators...
