FFA experience led to
decision to teach
GREENVILLE – “A lot of it is patience,” said David Heffelfinger.
“Theirs… yours… you never know. You have a plan. It looks really good
on paper, then… (pause) Well, it doesn’t always work out that way.”
Heffelfinger is one of the new teachers at Woodland Heights Primary
School for 2014-15. His position – kindergarten teacher – is unique in
that he is the only full time male teacher on the staff. According to
Krista Quellhorst, secretary, he is the first male kindergarten teacher
for as long as she can remember.
“This is fantastic,” Heffelfinger said referring to his position at
Woodland. “I was greeted with open arms. I have a support team…
anything I need they help me with.”
A recent Urbana University graduate in Early Childhood Education,
Heffelfinger said he had no intention of teaching when he was in high
school at Miami East. “I was in FFA,” he noted. “We raised sheep; I
took one to Ag Day for a sheep shearing demonstration. At the end I
gave each kid a little piece of wool…
“It was a thrill,” he said. “Handing them the wool, seeing their eyes
light up...
