Celebrating America’s
birthday
ANSONIA, NEW MADISON – “It’s about our independence,” said 11-year-old
Ethan Osterloh July 4 while waiting for the Ansonia parade to begin. He
was one of the few who understood the meaning of the day, but wasn’t
quite sure of the time frame. “It was a long time ago,” he said.
Younger children, like Ethan’s sister, 7-year-old Lexie, and 6-year-old
Ella Schlarman, were simply there for the parade and the candy. Another
young man said he didn’t know he was going to take a quiz… he just
wanted candy.
An 8-year-old boy said his birthday was today. He didn’t realize it was
also America’s birthday.
Further south the story was similar. “We’re here to celebrate the
Declaration of Independence,” said one young lady, the oldest of six
brothers and sisters. Her younger siblings were there for the candy and
the parade. Matthew, Abbigayle, Kaylee, Faith, Brittany and Elizabeth
were six of 11 children of Kevin and Sharon Brewer’s family.
How long ago? Mom helped with the math… “240 years old? 249?” Nope.
Someone said, “You messed up.” 14-year-old Emma and three other young
ladies (Claire, Gretchen and Aubrey) discussed the question extensively
and came up with 239 years...
