Premier Health
highlights partnership with Edison
Premier Health Vice President and System Chief Nursing Officer, Dr.
Sylvain Trepanier, visited Edison Community College on February 27 to
review the sustained academic relationship between Premier Health and
the College.
Terry Fry, Chief Nursing Officer for Upper Valley Medical Center,
accompanied Dr. Trepanier. Together they met with Edison
representatives, Dr. Karen Rafinski, Interim President; Dr. Patti Ross,
Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs; Gwen Stevenson, Dean of
Nursing and Health Sciences; and nursing faculty members.
During the visit, Dr. Trepanier and Ms. Fry toured the nursing lab,
observed nursing students who were participating in an exercise using
the iStan human simulators, and discussed the clinical partnership and
hiring practices between Premier Health, Edison Community College, and
their graduates.
Dr. Trepanier explained Premier Health’s hiring practices for
registered nurses and emphasized that Premier Health, which includes
Upper Valley Medical Center, hires nurses who have obtained associate
degrees as well as baccalaureate degrees with a deliberate emphasis on
baccalaureate nurses (an evidence-based approach).
Premier Health’s focus on nursing is what makes a difference to the
patient, which according to the Institute of Medicine Report means
having more baccalaureate and masters degree prepared nurses at the
bedside (80%). “The Premier Health Network is always willing to hire
Edison graduates if they possess the skills and attitudes that are
aligned with the organization’s values,” said Dr. Trepanier.
During the hiring process, Premier Health considers the applicant’s
degree, traits, and growth potential when making hiring decisions.
Associate degree prepared nurses hired into the Premier Health system
are asked to complete a baccalaureate degree within 3 years of hire.
Premier has tuition assistance to help with cost.
Dr. Trepanier acknowledged the life-long learning process of nurses
which for some may begin with an associate degree as a starting point.
He also reinforced the importance of the relationship between Premier
Health and Edison Community College in continuing to deliver quality
care.
Edison is proud of the academic relationship with Premier Health in
preparing students to be future nurses in delivering the highest
quality care to patients. Applications for Edison’s Registered Nursing
program are currently being accepted for spring 2016 admission. For
