‘adjourn’ a successful semester
GREENVILLE – “It’s amazing what some students can do given the
opportunity,” said one Edison Community College professor. He was
referring to a student who barely spoke a word in his class, but had
become much more socialized and outgoing after 16 weeks in a public
speaking class.
Another student hardly said a word for the first eight weeks of the
term; seldom smiled or took part in class discussions. By the end of
the term the student was “adjourning” along with the rest of the
students. The term comes from a definition of the group process, from
forming (just getting started), through several steps, to adjourning
(celebration of the completion of a common goal).
Edison’s Fundamentals of Communication (COM 121) classes wrapped up May
6. Since coursework was complete the first part of the week, students
were given the opportunity to skip class or celebrate their success.
They chose to celebrate.
COM 121 focuses on public speaking, with a mandatory eight speeches
throughout the term, but also relies heavily on the Edison core values
of communication, critical thinking...
