Edison’s Library
Tackles Hunger and Overdue Materials
Edison Community College’s Library will attempt to solve two problems
with one can of peas when it launches its new “Food for Fines” program
this summer.
The new program offers amnesty for long-overdue materials. The catch is
that instead of digging into their pockets for fines, students and
other library patrons can search their cupboards for donations of food
that the library will turn over to the Bethany Center in Piqua, Ohio.
Each item donated equates to $1.
This is an initiative used at both public and academic libraries
nationwide, and the Edison Library is excited to offer this program to
the students, staff, faculty, and communities that it serves.
The Library asks that donations include only shelf-stable foods, such
as canned fruits, vegetables and meats, soups, cereals, boxed meals,
pasta, peanut butter and jelly. The library will not accept home-canned
items, opened foods, or foods past their expiration dates.
Collection boxes are set up at the main desk at the Edison Library,
1973 Edison Drive, Piqua, Ohio. Students can find out the amount of
their outstanding fines by calling 937- 778-7950.
