Two juniors, 32
seniors earn Associate Degrees from Edison
It’s not everyday that you meet high school students equipped with the
aptitude to successfully complete an associate degree, let alone high
school juniors. A first in Edison Community College’s history, two high
school juniors will walk amongst their associate degree-earning peers
during the College’s 40th spring commencement ceremony on Friday, May
8, 2015.
Alyssa Roberts of Bradford High School and Gabrianna Mescher of
Versailles High School will both be awarded associate degrees before
entering their senior year. An additional thirty-two seniors will also
receive an associate degree before graduating from high school. This
was accomplished through Edison’s Post Secondary Education Opportunity
Program (PSEOP), which helps high-achieving students get a jump-start
on their college careers.
Roberts opted to take advantage of Edison’s Associate of Arts transfer
degree program, which allows her to transfer seamlessly to any
four-year university in Ohio upon graduating. “My biggest motivation
behind reaching this goal was the time and money I saved by taking
college courses while still in high school. Edison made it really easy
for me to participate in PSEOP.”
“I’ve done everything I can through Edison so next year I will be going
to Cedarville University to pick up additional classes needed to obtain
a bachelor’s degree in psychology,” added Roberts. “Once I’ve
accomplished that I can apply to be accepted directly into their
doctorate program. I would like to own a private practice some day and
specialize in treating schizophrenia and different types of
psychological conditions.”
The up-and-coming College Credit Plus program will build on the success
of previous programs such as PSEOP and dual enrollment. Beginning in
the fall of 2015, students will have the opportunity to earn up to
sixty college credits in 2 years before graduating from high school.
Course credits will be transferable to four-year universities under
strong articulation agreements.
“It is encouraging to see so many high school students taking advantage
of the opportunities available to earn college credit while still in
high school,” said Ted Long, Assistant Dean of Excellence and
Innovation in Teaching. “I suspect that this trend will only grow
in the years to come, especially with the expansion under College
Credit Plus in Ohio. If students are prepared for college, this
acceleration can save costs and present a strong value proposition. My
congratulations to all high school graduates of the class of 2015!”
A total of 427 students will have credentials conferred at this year’s
commencement ceremony, which begins at 7:00 p.m. in the gymnasium of
the Piqua campus. Dr. Leslie S. Perkins, Director of the United States
Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) Energy Office, will present the
evening’s keynote address.
