Kinesio Taping for
Orthopedics & Sports Medicine at VHCC
Dr. Stephen Winner, Physical Therapist at Versailles Health Care
Center, recently received training in Kinesio Taping with an emphasis
on Orthopedic and Sports Medicine. Dr. Winner is now certified in
this effective method of treatment. Kinesio Taping is a
definitive rehabilitative taping technique that is designed to
facilitate the body’s natural healing process while providing support
and stability to muscles and joints without restricting the body’s
range of motion. Additionally, this method provides extended soft
tissue manipulation to prolong the benefits of manual therapy
administered within the clinical setting. Latex-free and wearable for
days at a time, Kinesio Tex Tape is safe for populations ranging from
pediatric to geriatric, and successfully treats a variety of
orthopedic, neuromuscular, neurological and other medical conditions.
Dr. Winner’s training consisted of the application of the Kinesio
Taping Method to relax and stimulate muscles which improves pain,
swelling, joint mobility and stability. He was taught various
taping techniques for treatment of the spine and upper/lower extremity
dysfunction as well as for treatment of unique conditions using the
concepts and principles of the Kinseio Taping Method.
Conditions treated with Kinesio Taping include: sprains and
strains, athletic injury, muscle spasms, trigger points, muscle
weakness, sciatica, migraines, cervicogenic headaches, RTC pain,
tendonitis, bursitis, scoliosis, joint pain, edema, muscle
soreness, scar reduction, plantar fasciitis, carpal tunnel,
patellar tacking, post surgery rehab, and many more.
“Kinesio Taping has allowed me to tape and successfully treat
nearly any condition. Patients have described this tape as “magic
tape” and frequently ask to be taped at the conclusion of every
appointment,” said Dr. Winner, PT, DPT, CKTP.
The Kinesio Taping Method differs from athletic strapping tape in many
ways. Athletic strapping tape is used mostly to limit range of
motion and to constrict muscle movement. Whereas the Kinesio
Taping Method is used to create a bridge over the areas that are
injured so that athletes can perform sport movements and have either
prophylactic support or support to an injured part of the body.
Athletic tape is typically removed after the end of an athletic event,
but Kinesio Tex Tape is worn up to five days.
