Edison Faculty
Honored with Excellence in Teaching Awards
Edison State Community College faculty members Marva Archibald, Elisha
Hicks, Carolyn Jackson, and Vickie Kirk are recipients of the 2015
Faculty Excellence in Teaching Award from the Southwestern Ohio Council
for High Education (SOCHE). The instructors were honored at Faculty
Excellence Awards banquet on Friday, October 30, 2015, at the Dayton
Art Institute.
Each year SOCHE hosts a faculty awards banquet honoring excellence in
teaching at member institutions. Edison nominated award winners based
on the institution’s criteria, with special consideration of
demonstrated excellence and awards received throughout the past
academic year. Edison faculty members joined colleagues from SOCHE’s
twenty-two member institutions honored at the banquet including Antioch
University, the University of Dayton, and Wright State University.
“Our culture of caring and student support is a point of pride among
our faculty and excellence in the classroom is promoted and evaluated
on a faculty-to-faculty basis,” said Edison State President, Dr. Doreen
Larson.
“These four faculty members exemplify the culture of Edison State and
how faculty excellence permeates all of our academic divisions. They
are innovative and have developed teaching methods that allow for
students to work in teams, they provide experiences in problem-solving
and critical thinking, and they are leaders in using technology to
individualize instructions.”
Marva Archibald, Assistant Professor of Office Systems and
Administration, provides an excellent learning experience to her
students whether it’s in the classroom, online, or through an internet
video conference connection to Edison’s Darke County Campus. Archibald
is supportive of students and always willing to help and guide them so
they can accomplish the learning objectives of the course. Archibald is
also the Chair of Edison’s Diversity Committee, which fosters a diverse
culture across campus.
Elisha Hicks, Assistant Professor of Early Childhood Education, is an
outstanding teacher. Her knowledge and experience are assets, which
help students relate real life situations to the theory they are
learning. Elisha is a role model for caring, positivity, and open
mindedness which helps establish a classroom of inclusivity and mutual
support. Hicks cares deeply about her students wants the best for them.
Carolyn Jackson, Assistant Professor of Office Systems and
Administration, is outstanding in the classroom. She expects the best
from her students while maintaining a wonderful rapport with them.
Students particularly enjoy her online courses. In addition, Jackson
has served Edison on the faculty Curriculum Committee and as an officer
for Faculty Senate. She also leads the program Advisory Committee in
their effort to host a large event for Administrative Professionals
Day, which attracts about 100 professionals to campus every year.
Vickie Kirk, Instructor of Allied Health, exemplifies excellence in
teaching. She has extensive knowledge and experience in your content
area and she has the additional qualities of enthusiasm, interpersonal
skills, and humor. These qualities and characteristics provide the
basis for her strong, positive connections to students. Kirk always
puts student success first, which is evident in her classroom and in
her collaboration with others as she is a true team player, willing to
do what is best for the student.
