kids teach drug prevention skills
GREENVILLE – Recovery & Wellness Centers of Midwest Ohio isn’t just
about recovery and wellness (from drug and alcohol abuse)… it’s also
about prevention. Kelly Harrison, Prevention Specialist, is teaching
“Incredible Years” to Kindergartners in Ansonia… Life Skills to Arcanum
seventh graders… And Safe Dates to eighth grade students at Greenville
Junior High School. She offers the same programs at the same grade
levels to many Darke County campuses.
While the approach may be different, they all have one goal:
prevention… prevention from the onset of drug and alcohol abuse. From
one day to the next she can also be at Tri-Village, Woodland Heights or
any of the other districts.
“Prevention efforts have streamlined in recent years,” she said. “(The
approach is) to identify the best practices for supporting our youth.”
Harrison reaches about 400 students during a school year. She teaches
refusal skills, coping with stress, good decision making, dealing with
peer pressure and positive communication. She also educates students
about drugs, alcohol and tobacco...
