Systems Go a hit with vets and families

GREENVILLE – Systems Go, the U.S. Air Force Band of Flight stationed out of Wright Patterson AFB, performed for veterans and their families on Veterans Day at the Darke County Fair Aug. 26. The event was sponsored by the Darke County Veterans Services.

Staff Sgt. Kelly Perry, a bubbly young vocalist who loves her job, said “This is my therapy. Everybody needs therapy…” Systems Go is a community relations and ceremonial performing group; it is also considered the Band of Flight’s main recruiting element for the Air Force. “I love this operation,” she added.

“We do educational outreach (for the kids),” she said, “and on-base stuff for officers and civilian guests. Probably two-thirds of our gigs involve singing the National Anthem.” According to a press release the group tours extensively to high schools throughout the Midwest promoting the Air Force and opportunities it provides. It also performs at fairs, festivals, amusement parks and a host of community sponsored events during the summer.

Perry said she auditioned for the job when she was 19 years old. She was a civilian at the time. “Everyone had to audition to win the job. Some were civilians; others auditioned out of different units.” She’s been performing with Systems Go for nearly 12 years...
