Empowering
student builds robot at the library
Walk into the Young Adult section of the Greenville Public Library on a
recent Wednesday afternoon and be prepared to be tracked by a robot.
Initially the robot was programmed to go up and down the book aisles…
maybe looking for a book on robotic sportsmanship.
During its final exploration, the robot could be found leaving the
Young Adult section and checking out the videos available on loan.
“When will it go up to the third floor?”
“Build me a ramp,” said Devin Meade, grinning. Devin is a Greenville
7th grader who is also in the Empowering Darke County Youth After
School and Summer Tutoring Programs. It took him about three weeks
(Wednesdays) to build and program his robot.
Devin, and fellow student Elijah Sparks, were two students who built
robots as part of Greenville Public Library’s Lego Robotics summer
offering for Young Adults.
The program, which has now wrapped up, was taught by the library’s IT
Specialist Reuben Kennett and Young Adult Specialist Amanda Olson. The
library provides a variety of community service programs, including
Summer Reading, Story Time, Family Fun Day, First Friday events,
classic movies and informational presentations.
A July 27 Greenville Library presentation will be offered by Edison
State communications students on Literacy: The Cornerstone of Success.
