Edison State staff surprises Empowering students with Halloween visit

GREENVILLE - It was the day before Halloween; Empowering Darke County Youth students were enjoying their daily after school snack when three Edison State staff members - Chad Beanblossom, Vice President of Regional Campuses, Rhonda Rich, Darke County Success Advisor, and Melissa Eve, Darke County Resource Specialist - made a surprise visit to their After School Program.

They came bearing gifts... candy and books targeted to the different grade levels in the program. The books were the students to keep.

“We wanted to do something that was fun and educational, and thought books would be the perfect fit,” Beanblossom said. He added that he and his staff members had a great time visiting with the students and volunteers of Empowering Darke County Youth.

Edison State Darke County Campus is the home base of operations for the Empowering programs and provides administrative support when needed. The campus hosted Empowering's first After School Program in 2016 and continues to host its Summer Tutoring Program each year.

Empowering's 2018-19 ASP is available to kindergarten through eighth grade students in the new Greenville Schools Elementary and Middle School campus on North Ohio Street. Currently, more than 130 students are enrolled and attendance averages about 50 daily. Edison State students have been, and continue to be, the main source of volunteers.

“Empowering Darke County Youth and Greenville City Schools are providing a valuable service to our community,” Beanblossom noted, “and Edison State Community College is proud to be a part of these efforts.”

Empowering continues to have a great need for adult volunteers, as well as financial support. Donations can be sent to Empowering Darke County Youth, PO Box 1113, Greenville 45331. To volunteer or for additional information, email empoweringyouth101@gmail.com or go to our Facebook page.

The Empowering Mission: Empowering Darke County Youth is a United Way Partner Agency providing After School and Summer Tutoring programs to assist students in the areas of language arts and math with the goal of Strong Students for a Strong Community.
