Empowering Director’s Notes
People Power… help us help a child learn
Our revised Greenville program has proven to be successful in reaching
the students who need our help the most… we work with First and Third
Graders two days a week, Second and Fourth Graders two days a week, and
Fifth through Eighth Graders four days a week. While all students
benefited from After School tutoring last year, our attendance averaged
50 students a day. It was impossible to provide the individual
assistance some students needed with our limited resources, and the
anticipated increase in requests this year would have been untenable.
Our attendance is now about 32 students a day, so we are able to
provide focused, individual help to most of the students who need it.
We anticipate adding more students throughout the year as caregivers
become concerned over their children’s progress. We will be able to
graduate students who can begin working successfully on their own, but
our student population will still likely climb to last year’s level. We
need help!
We need you!!
Can we have one hour a week? Just one! Every week has 168 hours… we’re
asking you to give us – our kids – just one of them. You can work with
a fifth-eighth grader who needs your help from 2:30 to 3:30 any day,
Monday through Thursday, or you can work with a first or third grader
who needs your help from 4:00 to 5:00 Monday or Wednesday, or you can
work with a second or fourth grader who needs your help from 4:00 to
5:00 Tuesday or Thursday.
We tutor the basics… math, reading and comprehension. Whatever your
strong suit is, there is a place for you. Training provided as needed.
We need volunteers, and we need experienced/retired educators to join
our Supervisors. Please consider helping out.
We would like to thank JT’s Brew & Grill for once again supporting
our efforts. They are donating 20 percent of their proceeds to
Empowering Darke County Youth on Wednesday, Oct. 30. JT’s Brew &
Grill is open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., so plan on enjoying some great
food and helping our kids at the same time.
In fact, maybe lunch AND dinner might not be a bad idea?
We welcome Ansonia Local Schools to their own Empowering After School
Program. They are off to a great start and are fortunate to have a
solid volunteer base, at least so far, that allows individual work with
all students who need academic help.
And we would like to thank Big Brothers Big Sisters for once again
joining us two Wednesdays out of each month. We supply the students,
they supply volunteers and an education-oriented program. We split the
time… tutoring the first half of the session, the Big Brothers Big
Sisters program the second half. This is a big win for our students,
some of whom could also benefit from the organization’s Community
Mentoring program.
The Empowering Mission: Empowering Darke County Youth is a 501c3 United
Way Partner Agency providing After School and Summer Tutoring programs
to assist students in the areas of language arts and math with the goal
of Strong Students for a Strong Community.
