Program Updates Promise Another Successful Year
By Chelsea Jones
Assistant Program Coordinator, Greenville
Empowering Darke County Youth
A new school year of tutoring has begun, and I could not be more
excited! As the Assistant Program Coordinator for EDCY, I strive to
find ways to improve our growing program for the students we serve, as
well as the tutors and volunteers who help. Over the summer I worked
with Kay Sloat, Program Coordinator, to manage the growing number of
students in need of tutoring. Our plan of action was to tutor 1st and
3rd grades on Mondays and Wednesdays and 2nd and 4th grades on Tuesdays
and Thursdays, while continuing to tutor 5th through 8th grades Mondays
through Thursdays.
We hope these changes will improve the tutor-to-student ratio and
create a more focused setting. Additionally, each student has their own
binder of short stories and comprehension questions, as well as math
exercises tailored to their grade; this allows students to stay on
track and EDCY to follow each student’s progress.
As a tutor, I am grateful for the program updates. I tutor mostly on
Mondays and Wednesdays and have already noticed improvements. The
binders have made it easier to work in small groups, answer questions,
see student progress, and ensure everyone always has work to do after
finishing their homework. I have noticed many of our students struggle
with reading comprehension, and I am glad EDCY is focusing more on
this. Sometimes it’s difficult to get the students motivated to read
the short stories and answer the questions, but that’s because
comprehension is very challenging for them. Most of the notes from the
students’ teachers have expressed a need for improvement on reading
comprehension and writing, so I am excited to help our students and see
them improve.
I am eager for another year of working with the kids and watching them
improve. I’m also optimistic about the program changes and hope they
will bring more volunteers and tutors to EDCY.
